Keeping Your La Marzocco Swift Grinder in Top Shape: A Cleaning Guide

The La Marzocco Swift grinder is a high-performance machine designed for precision and consistency. However, like any piece of coffee equipment, regular cleaning is essential to maintain its performance and longevity. This guide provides a step-by-step tutorial on how to clean your Swift grinder effectively.

Tools You'll Need:

  • Small brush (like a "toilet brush" as mentioned in the video)
  • Pokey stick (or similar tool for clearing debris)
  • 1-inch paint brush
  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Flathead screwdriver (optional, for more detailed cleaning)
  • Warm soapy water
  • Window cleaner (optional)
  • Paper towels (optional)

Step-by-Step Cleaning Process:

  1. Safety First: Turn off and unplug the grinder.
  2. Empty the Hopper: Close the hopper chute, remove the hopper, and carefully tip it upside down to empty any remaining beans. Store the beans in an airtight container. Wash the hopper with warm soapy water, rinse thoroughly, and allow it to air dry completely. Never put the hopper in a dishwasher.
  3. Remove Excess Grounds: Remove any loose grounds from the chute area.
  4. Remove the Top Cover: Hold the brake (to prevent the shaft from spinning) and push on the flat side of the top cover to unscrew and remove it. Brush off any coffee grounds from the cover. You can wash and dry it if needed.
  5. Clean the Chute: Use the small brush to clean inside the chute, removing any accumulated grounds. Pay attention to the area around the shaft and where the lugs lock in.
  6. Clean the Internal Chute (with Pokey Stick): Open the small flap on the chute. Insert the pokey stick through the yellow circle opening to clear any grounds built up on the other side of the grinder. Repeat on the other side if applicable.
  7. Clean the Burrs:
    • Vacuum any remaining beans from the burr chamber.
    • Use the pokey stick to carefully remove any grounds stuck around the edge of the burrs.
    • For a more thorough clean (recommended weekly), use the flathead screwdriver to loosen the three screws on the top collar (only a quarter turn!). This will allow you to access and remove any grounds trapped underneath the rim. If you're not comfortable using a screwdriver, ask a technician to do this during a service. Retighten the screws after cleaning. Vacuum again.
  8. Reassemble the Grinder: Reattach the top cover, ensuring the brake is engaged while tightening. Reattach the hoppers, ensuring they are locked in place and the chute is open to allow beans to flow.
  9. Test the Grinder: Turn the grinder back on and run a small amount of coffee through it to ensure it's functioning correctly.
  10. Final Cleanup: Clean up any spilled beans or grounds around the grinder. Use window cleaner and paper towels for a polished finish.

Important Tips:

  • Moving the Grinder: Never lift or move the grinder by the chute. Always lift it from the base with two hands.
  • Button Cleaning: If the buttons on your grinder start to discolor, inform your technician.
  • Frequency: Regular cleaning (daily for the chute and weekly for a more thorough clean) is essential for optimal performance.

Why Cleaning Is Important:

  • Consistent Grind Quality: Built-up coffee oils and grounds can affect grind consistency, leading to uneven extraction and off-flavors.
  • Preventing Blockages: Accumulated grounds can clog the chute and other parts of the grinder.
  • Extending Grinder Lifespan: Regular cleaning helps prevent wear and tear on the burrs and other components.

By following these cleaning steps, you can keep your La Marzocco Swift grinder in excellent condition and enjoy consistently delicious coffee for years to come.
